IT for DJs

I think with the progression of technology being used by DJs it would make sense to have an IT service that caters specially to DJs. It's become quite complicated in it's current state, with DJs bringing external soundcards, midi usb controllers, time coded cds and vinyl, mp3s, and many other complications. With all these different devices, something can go wrong pretty easily. The closest thing I've found to this are websites that address these issues, but as far as a service that people could rely on, I don't think that exists.

Web Presence

One of the areas I'd like to expand into would be an online blog. Through this blog myself and other people could post songs, mixes, articles, or anything else they would like to share. By doing this, a following could be created for all the people involved with the website. This would make promotion much more effective.

What I'd like to use would be a private host with wordpress. This would allow each person to log into wordpress with their unique ID and create posts. Having a private host would also allow music, videos, and pictures to all be hosted there without having to use a third person site like mediafire or rapidshare.

Online Streaming

One thing I'd like to do is start streaming DJ sets online. I'd like to either do an audio only web cast or provide video too via web cam. All this would be recorded to for on demand downloading. This is something I'm still researching and looking into. The service that seams most common for this type of thing is Ustream, it's free but add supported. I'd like to start testing this pretty soon, and if it works out well, try to start doing a scheduled show maybe bi-monthly.
I think that this would be a good way to build recognition and open up possible opportunities for future jobs, shows, or other events.

So I've been thinking about what else I could do to raise money besides getting hired for gigs. I've thought about starting a DJ class, training sessions people could pay for. Another option would be renting out equipment etc. but that might require insurance, and be more trouble than it's worth. I'd also like to explore the idea of selling downloadable content, but would have to research copyright rules etc. of that type of thing.

Ideas (Serious Ones)

Continuing my pursuit for some serious ideas, I'll post some that I've been thinking of recently:
  1. I might like to build something around sharing knowledge of DJing, music production, and music industry related things. I figure that this would be both helpful for the local community and a good networking opportunity for myself.
  2. I could continue trying to get jobs DJing local things but I feel like something extra would be needed to give myself an edge or something to make me standout.
  3. I've done work in the past doing visuals for music so I could try to combine these two skills offer people a services where both audio and visual post production could be done by one person/small team.
I'm trying to narrow these ideas down. With most of the ideas I don't really know where to start, so I may have to do some research on them this week and evaluate which idea might be best to pursue.

Trying to find an idea

I still haven't centered in on what exactly I would like to do. I enjoy music a lot, both producing music and DJ-ing. As far as doing something new with this skill set, I'm still exploring different options.
  • Maybe I'll start a DJ service catering to really rich people, I could DJ for just one person, they could pull a nice recliner right up in front of me and enjoy a personal DJ experience. That wouldn't be awkward or anything.
  • I could produce very over the top filthy dubstep and sell it to foreign terrorists looking for noise terrorism or new torture techniques. Think of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UexCBJF_n-4 but 100x more obnoxious.
  • I could teach children how to DJ.... condition them from birth...... start some sort of -- no I'd have to buy way too many cribs and there would be too many bonnets around.
  • I could do a tour and play concerts in retirement homes, because old people are the only ones who understand or know what records and turntables are now. Also they wouldn't jump up and down as much and make the needles skip.
On a serious note, I'm still trying to think of a good (sane) idea to put some of these talents to use.
If anyone of the zero people who read this have any ideas feel free to share them.
